सन 83 में आधारित यह ब्रितानी फ़िल्म उस दौर के इंग्लैंड के बेरोजगार युवाओं (स्किनहेड्स) के उद्देश्यहीन और अक्सर हिंसक आवारापन, फ़ॉकलैंड्स युद्ध के सामाजिक दुष्परिणामों, थैचर के प्रति असंतोष, और कुछ "राष्ट्रवादियों" द्बारा परिस्थितियों को रंगभेदी रंग देने के तरीकों का एक कोलाज है. कथित तौर पर फ़िल्म लेखक-निर्देशक शेन मीडोज़ के अपने अनुभवों की कहानी है.

फ़िल्म अपने रंगरूप (और कई बार कथावस्तु) में 2002 की आयरिश क्लासिक ब्लडी संडे की याद दिलाती है. यूँ तो पूरी कास्ट का काम ही बेहतरीन है, पर उस दौर में बड़े हो रहे एक ऐसे 12 साल के बच्चे जिसके पिता युद्ध में मारे जा चुके हैं के पात्र में टॉमस टरगूज़ का अभिनय बेजोड़ है.

भाषा/विषयवस्तु चेतावनी - फ़िल्म में गालियाँ भरी पड़ी हैं. एफ़-वर्ड का इस्तेमाल हर आधे मिनट में है.

रीन ओवर मी (2007) Reign Over Me *** - डॉन चीडल, एडम सैंडलर. ड्रामा. सितंबर 11 की हवाई दुर्घटना में अपने परिवार को खो चुके सैंडलर को अरसे बाद अपने कॉलेज का पुराना दोस्त चीडल मिलता है और उसे सामान्य करने की कोशिश करता है. हालाँकि तालियों वाले सीन सैंडलर को मिले हैं और उन्होंने ठीक-ठाक निभाए भी हैं, फ़िल्म की हाइलाइट चीडल का अभिनय है. संयोग है कि कल "11 सितंबर" की बरसी भी है.

कैशबैक (2006) Cashback *** - कॉमेडी, ड्रामा, रोमांस. अनिद्रा का शिकार नायक अपनी कलात्मक परिकल्पनाओं को खुला छोड़ देता है. बढ़िया फ़िल्मांकन और पार्श्वसंगीत वाली यह ब्रिटिश फ़िल्म कई बार अपने फ़्रीज फ़्रेमों के साथ अचंभित कर देती है. सेक्सयुक्त दृश्यों, नग्नता, और भाषा के लिए R-rated.

द लुकआउट (2007) The Lookout *** - जोसफ़ गोर्डन-लेविट, ज़ेफ़ डेनियल्स. अपराध, रोमांच, ड्रामा. एक कार दुर्घटना में दिमागी चोट के बाद युवा नायक एक बैंक में जेनिटर की नौकरी कर रहा है. उसपर एक बैंक लुटेरे गैंग की नज़र पड़ती है और...

मिस्टर ब्रूक्स (2007) Mr. Brooks ***/ - केविन कॉसनर, डेमी मूर, विलियम हर्ट. अपराध, रोमांच, ड्रामा. एक ऐसे आदमी की कहानी जो कभी-कभी अपने पर अपनी ऑल्टर ईगो को हावी होने देता है, जिसे हत्या करना पसंद है. कॉसनर बढ़िया हैं और हर्ट भी. दोनों के बीच का इंटरएक्शन भी मज़ेदार है. रक्तरंजित हिंसा, सेक्सयुक्त दृश्यों, नग्नता, और भाषा के लिए R-rated.

"मेरी फ़िल्मों के लोग बिल्कुल मेरे जैसे ही होते हैं, सहजबुद्धि वाले, अपेक्षाकृत कम बौद्धिक क्षमता वाले लोग, जो अगर सोचते भी हैं तो तभी जब वे बात कर रहे होते हैं."- इंगमार बर्गमैन

मानवीय संवेदनाओं और रिश्तों पर गहरी, अक्सर दर्दनाक, पर अद्भुत फ़िल्में बनाने वाले स्वीडिश फ़िल्मकार इंगमार बर्गमैन नहीं रहे. वे 89 के थे.

बड़ी अजीब सी बात है कि इसी शनिवार (यानि परसों ही) मैं उनकी अंतिम फ़िल्मों में से एक 1978 में बनी ऑटम सोनाटा (Autumn Sonata) देख रहा था. शायद उसी वक्त जब वो अपने अंतिम सफ़र की तैयारी में थे. सोच कर सिहरन होती है.

सिनेमाई उत्कृष्टता की मिसाल.

द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के समय नाज़ी जर्मनी द्वारा फ़्रांस के कब्ज़े का एक बड़े वर्ग ने प्रतिरोध किया था. अंडरग्राउंड और काफ़ी हद तक असंगठित इस विरोध को फ़्रेंच रज़िस्टेंस (फ़्रांसीसी प्रतिरोध) के तौर पर जाना जाता है. फ़िल्म के लेखक (जोसफ़ केसेल) और निर्देशक (ज्याँ-पियरे मेलविल) दोनों खुद उस प्रतिरोध का हिस्सा थे. प्रतिरोध के अपने अनुभवों और कुछ असली किरदारों से उन्होंने यह फ़िल्म बुनी है. पर फ़िल्म देशभक्ति और उससे जुड़ी नारेबाज़ी के बारे में नहीं है. बल्कि जानबूझकर इससे बचती है. चालीस के दशक के पेरिस की गलियों के मेहनत और सूक्ष्मता से तैयार किए गए खुशबूदार और कुछ न्वारी (noirish) से नज़ारों की पृष्ठभूमि में कहानी किरदारों, उनकी क्षमताओं, भावनाओं, दुविधाओं, और निर्णयों की है. उससे भी ज़्यादा उनके अपने ज़िंदा रहने की.

अजीब सी बात है कि 1969 में फ़्रांस में प्रदर्शित इस फ़िल्म को अमेरिका के थियेटरों तक पहुँचने में 37 साल लग गये. किन्हीं वजहों से (निश्चय ही राजनैतिक नहीं, शायद व्यावसायिक) फ़िल्म पिछले साल तक अमेरिका में प्रदर्शित नहीं हुई थी. डीवीडी पर दो महीने पहले ही आई है. अमेरिकी दर्शक और समीक्षक इस देरी पर हैरान हैं. उनकी तालियों का शोर थमा नहीं है.

एक अधेड़ आदमी ख़ुदकुशी करना चाहता है और उसके लिए एक मददगार ढूँढ रहा है. प्लॉट पूरी तरह गले नहीं उतरता और दिलचस्पी घटाता है. दृश्य थोड़े खिंचे हुए हैं. संवाद कुछ जगह अपनी सहजता की वजह से अच्छे लगते हैं पर कई जगह ख़ुदकुशी के ख़िलाफ़ पुराने, घिसे-पिटे तर्कों को गूढ़ विचारों की तरह पेश किया गया है.

ईरानी रेगिस्तान और रेतिस्तान के नारंगी-पीले रंग से भरे फ़्रेम सुंदर लगते हैं. अभिनय, खास कर सहकलाकारों का, इतना अच्छा है कि डॉक्यूमेंट्री का सा एहसास देता है.

नोट्स -
1) पूरी फ़िल्म में तीन सह-कलाकार नायक से कार में बैठे बात करते दिखते हैं. वास्तव में उनमें से दो शूट के दौरान नायक (हुमायूँ इरशादी) से मिले ही नहीं. पर उसके बावजूद धाराप्रवाह कण्टिन्युटी अब्बास क्यारोस्तामी की निर्देशकीय और तकनीकी क्षमता दिखाती है.

2) [चेतावनी: आगे रहस्योद्घाटन है] फ़िल्म का अंत भ्रमित करता है. मंज़र अचानक रंगीन हो जाता है, फ़िल्म क्वालिटी विडियो जैसी हो जाती है और क्यारोस्तामी कैमरे और क्रू के साथ नज़र आते हैं. जैसे कह रहे हों कि ये जो आपने देखा वो बस एक फ़िल्म की शूटिंग थी. या ये कि दिख रहे सच के ऊपर एक और सच है?

कमाल का प्रयोग. फ़िल्म ईरान और बहरीन के बीच खेले गए पिछले फ़ुटबॉल विश्व-कप योग्यता मैच के साथ-साथ चलती है. कहानी और पात्रों का व्यवहार मैच की घटनाओं से प्रभावित होता रहता है. और फ़िल्म वहीं मैच के बीच शूट की गई है. डॉक्यूमेंटरी-नुमा फ़िल्मांकन के बीच कई कलाकारों का अभिनय बेजोड़ है. सोचिये अगर तो अन्दाज़ा लगाना मुश्किल है कि फ़िल्म और इसकी कहानी कैसे सोची गई होगी. योजना और इम्प्रोवाइज़ेशन के बीच कितने कमाल का इंटरऐक्शन रहा होगा. इतने इम्प्रोवाइज़ेशन के बाद इतनी दिलचस्प फ़िल्म बना पाना ही जफ़र पनाही की सफलता है.

फ़िल्म जहाँ ऊपरी तौर पर एक कॉमेडी है, इसकी परतों में ईरान के कई सामयिक और सांस्कृतिक मुद्दे उभरते हैं. बड़ी ख़ूबी से ये बात उठती है कि औरतों की आज़ादी जैसे मुद्दों को एक आम ईरानी मज़हब के जरिये ही देखे ये ज़रूरी नहीं. बल्कि अक्सर वह उसे सामाजिक संदर्भों से उपजे कॉमन सेंस के जरिये देखता है.

अमेरिका के सबसे बड़े सुरक्षा भंजन पर बनी यह फ़िल्म दिखाती है कि सच सचमुच कल्पना से ज़्यादा अजीब होता है. 2001 में रूस के लिए जासूसी करते पकड़े गए अमेरिकी एफ़बीआई एजेंट रॉबर्ट हैनसन और एफ़बीआई द्वारा ही उसके पीछे लगाए एक एफ़बीआई प्रशिक्षु एरिक ओ नील की कहानी. चुस्त पटकथा, बढ़िया निर्देशन (बिली रे), और वाशिंगटन के कुछ बढ़िया नज़ारे.

इन्क्रेडिबल्स और रैटाटूई वाले ब्रैड बर्ड की इस ऐनिमेशन फ़िल्म के बारे में बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं. पर फ़िल्म बच्चों को एक मज़ेदार कहानी तो सुनाती ही है, तकनीकी नज़रिये से भी बढ़िया है. पात्रों को आवाज़ देने वालों में जेनिफ़र ऐनिस्टन और वैन डीज़ल शामिल हैं.

माइकल मूर का ताज़ा शिकार है अमरीकी स्वास्थ्य प्रणाली. इंश्योरेंस व फ़ार्मा कंपनियों ने मिलकर अमेरिका में स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को कइयों के लिए दुर्लभ बना दिया है. बेरोज़गारों का तो इस देश में भगवान ही मालिक है. जबकि बाक़ी पश्चिमी दुनिया का हर देश (पड़ोसी कनाडा से लेकर अटलांटिक पार के यार इंगलैंड तक) सार्वजनिक स्वास्थ्य सेवा उपलब्ध कराता है, अमेरिका में ऐसा नहीं है. यहाँ ये निजी हाथों में है और सिर्फ़ उन्हीं को उपलब्ध है जो इंश्योरेंस कंपनियों के आसमान छूते प्रीमियम भर सकते हैं. मूर इसके पीछे के "क्यों" की पड़ताल कर रहे हैं. अपने ख़ास तंज भरे अंदाज़ में. उनकी पिछली फ़िल्म फ़ैरनहाइट 911 में प्रोपैगैंडा की बू थी और इसलिए मुझे बहुत पसंद नहीं आई थी. पर इस फ़िल्म से वे वापस बोलिंग फ़ॉर कोलंबाइन की श्रेष्ठता की तरफ़ बढ़ते दिखते हैं. दिलचस्प और झकझोरती डॉक्यूमेंट्री.

बेहतरीन अभिनय और चुटीले संवादों से सजी फ़िल्म. पीटर ओ टूल अविश्वसनीय हैं. जोडी व्हिटेकर भी प्रभाव डालती हैं. फ़िल्म माइ सन द फ़ैनेटिक वाले हनीफ़ क़ुरैशी ने लिखी है. जगह है इंग्लैंड. विषय है एक बुजुर्ग का एक युवा लड़की के प्रति आकर्षण. न न, भूलकर भी निःशब्द के बारे में मत सोचिये. दोनों की दुनियाएँ (भौतिक और कलात्मक दोनों) ही अलग हैं. परतदार.

वाशिंगटन पोस्ट के पुलित्ज़र विजेता फ़िल्मालोचक स्टीवन हंटर के उपन्यास पर आधारित. पूर्वसैनिक, कुशल निशानेबाज़ बॉब ली स्वैगर उनके उपन्यासों का नायक है. अभी तक इस नायक के साथ वे तीन उपन्यास लिख चुके हैं और यह फ़िल्म पहले उपन्यास पर आधारित है. यानि यह एक नयी रैम्बो-नुमा शृंखला की शुरुआत हो सकती है. फ़िल्म चुस्त और तेज़ है. मार्क वॉलबर्ग बॉब ली स्वैगर की भूमिका में जँचते हैं. पर कुल मिलाकर कहानी और पटकथा आम हॉलीवुडी महानायकीय फ़िल्मों के फ़ॉर्मूले से बँधे हैं. मज़ेदार पर साधारण.

हल्की-फुल्की ब्रिटिश स्टाइल की कॉमेडी. कहानी के नाम पर कुछ नहीं. फिर भी ह्यू ग्रांट और ड्रू बैरीमोर साथ हैं - इतवार की दोपहर को और क्या चाहिए. कुछ संवाद अच्छे हैं, कुछ बिल्कुल हल्के.

एल पचीनो. "88 मिनट में उसे एक ख़ून की गुत्थी सुलझानी है." अच्छा प्लॉट पर कमजोर रुपांतरण. फ़िल्म तेज़ चलती है पर अंत में संतुष्ट नहीं छोड़ती.

लाइफ़ इन ए मेट्रो (2007)

माना कि 60 के अमेरिका जैसा क्यूबिकल-संसार अब भारत में भी पसर रहा है. पर इसका मतलब यह तो नहीं कि फ़िल्मों के प्लॉट भी वहीं से उधारी लिए जाएँ. और उधारी भी कहाँ, चोरी, बल्कि चोरी भी क्या, डकैती! ऑरिजिनल चिंतन नाम की चीज़ मुम्बई में बची है कि नहीं?

फ़िल्म की प्रस्तावना ('प्रेमिस') ही दुरुस्त नहीं, बाक़ी का क्या कहिये. वही भेजा फ़्राय वाला हिसाब. 1960 की अमेरिकी फ़िल्म द अपार्टमेंट, जो कि एक निहायत मज़ेदार और ईमानदार फ़िल्म थी, का प्लॉट यूँ का यूँ मुम्बई में चिपका दिया है अनुराग बसु ने. भाई मेरे, महज भाषा बदलने से कल्चर अनुवादित नहीं होता.

ऊपर से निर्देशकीय नौसिखियेपन के उदाहरण बिखरे पड़े हैं फ़िल्म में. मिसाल देखिये (चेतावनी - आगे रहस्योदघाटन है). कोंकणा को उसका बॉस जब पहली बार ऑफ़िस (या जिम?) में बुलाता है तो फ़्रेम में उसके पीछे ब्रोकबैक माउण्टेन का पोस्टर लगा दिखता है. अब लीजिए. जो रहस्य फ़िल्म में 15 मिनट बाद इन्हें सनसनीखेज़ तरीके से खोलना है, उसकी वे यहीं बत्ती लगा देते हैं. (चेतावनी समाप्त) अनुराग बाबू, समझदार निर्देशक ऐसे चोंचले नहीं करता, फ़िल्म की क़ीमत पर तो कतई नहीं.

और एक ये प्रीतम एण्ड कंपनी. हर 20 मिनट में किसी चौराहे पर अपने बैंड के साथ गिटार लेकर आ जाते हैं. नहीं, 2-3 बार ठीक लगता है (ख़ासकर 'इन दिनों' सुनने में भला लगता है) पर फिर झुंझलाहट होने लगती है. अच्छे निर्देशक की एक ख़ूबी ये होती है कि उसे पता होता है कि कहाँ रुकना है.

पर एक बात अच्छी लगी अनुराग की. हालाँकि कुछ देर तक वो यथार्थ का नाटक ज़रूर करते हैं, क्लाइमैक्स तक आते-आते जब उनकी पोल-पट्टी खुलने लगती है, बड़ी ईमानदारी से मान जाते हैं कि भई मैं तो मज़ाक़ कर रहा था. कहाँ का सच, कौन सा यथार्थ. छोड़ो यार .. मुझे इरफ़ान को घोड़े पर शहर में भगाने दो.

नहीं नहीं ग़लत मत समझें. फ़िल्म बुरी नहीं है. अच्छा टाइम-पास है. इरफ़ान और कोंकणा फ़िल्म को देखने लायक बनाते हैं. इनकी अदाकारी में इम्प्रोवाइज़ेशन का अच्छा खासा पुट दिखता है. कोंकणा निश्चय ही अपने वक़्त की बेहतरीन अभिनेत्रियों में से हैं. तो अगर आम मसाला फ़िल्मों से कोई ख़ास आपत्ति न हो तो फ़िल्म आराम से देखिये. बुरी नहीं है. पर ऐसा अनुराग बसु की वजह से नहीं है, उनके बावजूद है.

मेरी कई बातों को कहीं बेहतर तरीके से समझाया है सिलेमा वाले साब जी ने. उनसे बस इतना ही कहना है कि फ़िल्म इस लायक नहीं कि इस पर कोई गंभीर बहस हो. इसलिए चाय खत्म कीजिए, आगे चलते हैं.

Perfume - The Story of A Murderer (2006)

कहानी 18 वीं सदी के फ़्रांस की है; एक ऐसे अतिमानवीय व्यक्ति की जो कीचड़ में जन्मा है (शब्दशः) पर जिसकी घ्राणशक्ति विलक्षण है. वह दुनिया भर की ख़ुशबुओं को पहचान सकता है और उन्हें अलग-अलग याद रख सकता है. उसके दिमाग में ख़ुशबुएँ ज़्यादा हैं उन्हें देने के लिए नाम कम. और उसकी अपनी कोई गंध नहीं है.

वह चाहता है ऐसा गुर जानना जिससे ज़िंदा चीज़ों की ख़ुशबू को सहेज कर रखा जा सके. और यह चाहत उसे स्याह रास्तों की तरफ़ मोड़ देती है.

एक अच्छी कहानी बढ़िया तरीके से सुनाई हुई. तकनीकी रूप से भी फ़िल्म उम्दा है. 18 वीं सदी का पैरिस अपनी समूची सुगंधों के साथ मौजूद है. पार्श्वसंगीत दृष्यों को गहराई देता है. फ़िल्म एक बेहद लोकप्रिय उपन्यास पर आधारित है. निर्देशक हैं रन लोला रन वाले टॉम टाइक्वर.

फ़िल्म के कमज़ोर पक्षों में आश्चर्यजनक रूप से डस्टिन हॉफ़मैन हैं. और क्लाइमैक्स भी मुझे कुछ हल्का लगा, पर बहुत थोड़ा सा.

अमेरिकी आप्रवासियों और उनकी समस्याओं को फ़िल्म कई सतहों पर छूती है. पर सतह से आगे नहीं बढ़ पाती. फ़िल्म के कथानक (सूनी तारापोरवाला) में और गहरे जाने का अवकाश था. इसके बावजूद फ़िल्म रोचक है और गुदगुदाते संवादों से ध्यान खींचे रखती है. किताब (झुम्पा लाहिड़ी लिखित) के मूल कथ्य के साथ भी न्याय करती है.

मीरा नायर (निर्देशक) अंग्रेज़ी दर्शकों के भारत संबंधी पूर्वाग्रहों को भुनाती ही दिखती हैं. चाहे वे कलकत्ता की सड़कों के सीन हों या ताजमहल के दृश्य, कैमरा (फ़्रेड्रिक एम्स) इन्हें टूरिस्टी नज़रिये से निहारता लगता है. पर कुछ दृश्य संवेदनशीलता और प्रभावी तरीके से फ़िल्माए गए हैं.

तकनीकी और तथ्यात्मक ग़लतियाँ कई हैं. जैसे न्यू यॉर्क से कलकत्ता की उड़ान के लिए एयर इंडिया की जगह इंडियन एयरलाइंस (जोकि भारत की घरेलू एयर सेवा है) का जहाज दिखाना. 1977 के कलकत्ता में द टेलीग्राफ़ का बोर्ड (बड़ी प्रमुखता से) दिखता है, जो 1982 में शुरू हुआ था. ग़लतियाँ इतनी स्पष्ट हैं कि फ़िल्म देखते वक़्त ही खटकती हैं.

अभिनेताओं में तब्बू कमाल है. इरफ़ान ख़ान ने भी, जैसी उनसे अपेक्षा थी, अच्छा काम किया है. उम्मीद से उलट, कैल पेन कई जगह अतिशयता के शिकार हुए हैं. एक जगह तो (जहाँ रेल्वे स्टेशन पर वे अपनी पत्नी पर गुस्सा होते हैं) वे ऐंग्री-यंग-अमिताभ के हैंगओवर में लगते हैं.

छुट-पुट:
1) नाम-क्रम के प्रदर्शन में बाँग्ला व रोमन अक्षरों का मेल मोहक है.
2) झुम्पा लाहिड़ी ख़ुद भी कुछ देर के लिए झुम्पा मासी के तौर पर दिखती हैं.
3) फ़िल्म की भाषा पारस्थितिक है. मुख्यतया अंग्रेज़ी, पर कई अवसरों पर बाँग्ला. एकाध डायलॉग हिंदी में भी हैं.
4) फ़िल्म के एक सीन में ये मेरा दीवानापन है (यहूदी) का एक हास्यास्पद रीमिक्स संस्करण बजता है. सीन दिलचस्प है.

फ़िल्म इस बात की मिसाल है कि एक अच्छा अभिनेता और एक अच्छी परफ़ॉर्मेंस किसी औसत, बल्कि घटिया, फ़िल्म को भी मनोरंजक बना सकते हैं. विनय पाठक अभी तक की श्रेष्ठतम कॉमिक अदायगियों में से एक के साथ अकेले दम पर फ़िल्म को देखने लायक बनाते हैं. सिर्फ़ देखने लायक ही नहीं, ठहाकों से भरपूर.

लगभग बिना कहानी वाली यह फ़िल्म एक शाम की घटना पर आधारित है. फ़्रांसीसी फ़िल्म 'द डिनर गेम' (अंग्रेज़ी शीर्षक) से उड़ाया गया प्लॉट भारतीय संदर्भों में नहीं जँचता और पटकथा में अविश्वसनीयता का भाव लाता है.

बाक़ी ऐक्टरों में रजत कपूर हमेशा की तरह संतुलित हैं. रणवीर शूरी छोटे से रोल में हैं और थोऽऽड़ा ओवर-द-टॉप हुए हैं. मिलिंद सोमन इतने बुरे ऐक्टर हैं ये मुझे पता नहीं था. सारिका ठीक हैं, कम से कम आज के कमल हासन से बेहतर. काफ़ी दिनों बाद उन्हें पर्दे पर देखकर अच्छा लगा.

विनय पाठक के लिए देखने वाली फ़िल्म. पुराने हिंदी गानों के शौकीनों को और मज़ा आयेगा.

यह महान फ़िल्मों की सूची नहीं है, हालाँकि इसकी अधिकतर फ़िल्में ऐसी किसी सूची में भी हो सकती हैं. ये वे फ़िल्में हैं जो हमारी साझा सिनेमाई विरासत का हिस्सा हैं. जिनके बारे में यह समझा जा सकता है कि इन्हें एक प्रबुद्ध सिनेमा दर्शक ने देखा होगा.

इस सूची में सिर्फ़ स्वातंत्र्योत्तर प्रदर्शित फ़िल्में शामिल हैं, क्योंकि उससे पहले की फ़िल्मों को दायरे में लेना मेरे लिए थोड़ा मुश्किल होता. कारण उस दौर से अनभिज्ञता तो है ही, यह भी है कि उस दौर की फ़िल्में अब आसानी से उपलब्ध नहीं हो पातीं. इसके अलावा और कई कारणों से भी, जिसमें कई कलाकारों का पाकिस्तान चले जाना शामिल है, वर्ष १९४७ हिंदी सिनेमा में एक विभाजक वर्ष है. इतना ज़रूर कहना चाहूँगा कि अगर १९४७-पूर्व की फ़िल्में भी इसमें जुड़तीं तो मैं ये कुछ फ़िल्में पहले जोड़ता: अछूत कन्या, क़िस्मत, डॉ कोटनीस की अमर कहानी, पुकार, सिकंदर.

मेरी कोशिश रही है कि महत्त्वपूर्ण विधाओं, मुद्दों, निर्देशकों, अभिनेताओं, प्रयोगों और हर काल को उचित प्रतिनिधित्व मिले. साथ ही मैंने यह भी ध्यान रखने की कोशिश की है कि चयनित फ़िल्में व्यापक तौर पर मौलिक हों.

स्टार वार्स एपिसोड III - रिवेंज ऑफ़ द सिथ

'स्टार-वार्स' एक बहुत बड़े अमरीकी दर्शक-वर्ग के लिए बतौर एक कहानी कुछ-कुछ वैसा ही स्थान रखती है जैसा शायद भारतीयों के लिए रामायण या महाभारत (अरे भाई कहा तो सही, "कहानी के तौर पर")। इसलिए इसमें कुछ भी अस्वाभाविक नहीं कि इस श्रृंखला की अन्तिम फ़िल्म के प्रदर्शन पर पूरा अमरीका आजकल स्टार-वार्स-मय हो रहा है।

इस श्रृंखला की यह नवीनतम और शायद अन्तिम फ़िल्म एक खास कारण से विशेष है। और वह यह है कि इस फ़िल्म की prequel (पूर्ववर्ती) और sequel (पश्चगामी) दोनों फ़िल्में पहले ही बन चुकी हैं। और वह भी एक-एक नहीं बल्कि इससे पहले के २ भाग और इसके बाद के ३ भाग प्रदर्शित हो चुके हैं। यानी खास बात यह कि फ़िल्म का प्रारम्भ और अन्त तय है। ऐसी दशा में किसी भी फ़िल्म को रुचिकर बनाना खासा मुश्किल काम है। पर जॉर्ज लूकस ने न केवल यह मुश्किल काम कर दिखाया है बल्कि बड़े ही शानदार तरीके से।

पूरी श्रृंखला का एक छोटा-सा परिचय दूँ तो यह फ़िल्म यानी "Episode III - Revenge of The Sith" इसकी छठी फ़िल्म है। जी हाँ, एपिसोड ३, पर छठी। दरअसल पहली और मूल स्टार-वार्स को एपिसोड ४ के नाम से जाना जाता है, जो १९७७ में प्रदर्शित हुई थी। उसके बाद आईं ५ (१९८० में) और ६ (१९८३ में), जिन्हें लूकस ने निर्देशित नहीं किया (हालाँकि लेखन सभी फ़िल्मों में उन्हीं का था)। उसके बाद १६ वर्षों के अन्तराल के बाद १९९९ में प्रदर्शित हुई लूकस-निर्देशित एपिसोड १ और फिर २००२ में पिछली वाली यानी एपिसोड २। कहानी का क्रम भी बेशक नम्बरों के अनुसार ही है। इस नई फ़िल्म की कहानी वहाँ से शुरू होती है जहाँ पिछली प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म एपिसोड २ में खत्म हुई थी, और वहाँ खत्म होती है जहाँ से पहली फ़िल्म (जो २८ साल पहले आई थी) शुरू हुई थी। चक्कर आ रहे हैं? अच्छा छोड़िये। सब भूल जाइये और फ़िल्म देखिये। श्रृंखला की हर फ़िल्म अपने आप में पूरी है (चलो, लगभग पूरी है), किसी ग़ज़ल के शे'र जैसी। मैंने एपिसोड १ को छोड़ कर बाकी सारी फ़िल्में देखी हैं और मेरे विचार में उनमें से यह नवीनतम फ़िल्म, पहली फ़िल्म यानी एपिसोड ४ से अगर बेहतर नहीं तो कम भी नहीं। इसके अलावा एपिसोड ६, जो इस रामकहानी का अन्त दिखाती है, भी इस श्रृंखला की बेहतर फ़िल्मों में से है।

बेशक अगर आपने अगली-पिछली फ़िल्में देख रखी हैं तो आपका जायका थोड़ा अलग होगा, शायद बेहतर भी (क्योंकि आप फ़िल्म की कई सतहों को देख पाएँगे), पर पहली बार के दर्शक के लिए भी फ़िल्म बहुत मजेदार और रुचिकर है। इस फ़िल्म में पहली फ़िल्म के मुकाबले एक अन्तर जो साफ उभरकर सामने आता है वह है हल्के-फुल्के क्षणों की कमी। जहाँ पहली फ़िल्म में (और कुछ अन्य कड़ियों में भी) 3CPO और R2D2 के बीच के हल्के-फुल्के प्रसंग, हान सोलो (हैरिसन फ़ोर्ड अभिनीत) के चुटीले संवाद, राजकुमारी लिया और हान सोलो की नोंक-झोंक फ़िल्म का एक बड़ा हिस्सा थे और फ़िल्म का माहौल मनोरंजक और हल्का बनाये रखते थे, इस फ़िल्म में कोई भी चरित्र वह भूमिका अदा नहीं करता। और 3CPO, जिसका चरित्र ऐसा कर सकता है, उसे बहुत कम फ़ुटेज दी गई है। पर खास बात यह है कि इससे फ़िल्म की मनोरंजकता पर कोई खास बुरा प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता। कहानी के मामले में पहली फ़िल्म का मुकाबला कोई भी और कड़ी नहीं कर पाती, पर प्रारम्भ और अन्त के निश्चित होने के बाद जो जगह बचती थी उसे देखते हुए यह नई फ़िल्म अच्छी कहानी कहती है। साथ ही पिछली फ़िल्मों के सभी छूटे/बिखरे सिरों को जोड़ने का जिम्मा भी बखूबी निभाती है। सिनेमा-निर्माण में उपलब्ध नई तकनीकों का बहुत अच्छा प्रयोग किया गया है और अचरज में डालने वाले (यह जानते हुए भी कि कम्प्यूटरों के प्रयोग ने अब बहुत कम असम्भव दृश्य छोड़े हैं) दृश्यों की कमी नहीं है। स्टार-वार्स की अन्य फ़िल्मों की तरह कौतूहल पैदा करने वाले चरित्रों की भी भरमार है। अभिनेताओं में कोई भी असाधारण नहीं है पर सबने ठीक-ठाक काम किया है। अगर कोई थोड़ा विशेष प्रभावित करता है तो वह है योडा को अभिनीत करने वाला कलाकार यानी फ़्रैंक ऑज़।

कुल मिलाकर लूकस आराम की साँस ले सकते हैं। विश्व फ़िल्म इतिहास में उनका नाम सुरक्षित है। उन्होंने अमरीका की कई पीढ़ियों को उनके बचपन के कुछ सबसे यादगार चलते-फिरते पात्र दिए हैं। कई माँ-बापों को यह राहत दी है कि वे बच्चों की कोई फ़िल्म उनके साथ बैठकर बिना ऊबे देख सकें। उन्होंने एक विज्ञान-गल्प, जो २८ सालों के एक लम्बे दायरे और छह मनोरंजक फ़िल्मों में फैला हुआ है, को जीवन और उससे भी बढ़कर एक रोचक और उम्दा अन्जाम दिया है। और कौन कर सका है ये!

स्वदेस - दूसरे दौर की समीक्षा

कल दुबारा 'स्वदेस' देखी। इससे पहले एक लम्बे अर्से में मुझे ऐसी कोई फ़िल्म याद नहीं आती, जो छह महीने के अन्तराल में दो बार साढ़े तीन घंटे तक मुझे बिठा के रख सकी हो। और यह तब है जबकि शाहरुख खान का नाम सुनते ही मुझे छींकें शुरू हो जाती हैं।

फ़िल्म की सबसे खास बात मुझे इसका असलीपन लगा। पात्रों, घटनाओं, मुद्दों से लेकर गलियों, घरों, भाषा और लहजे तक सब बहुत वास्तविक और सच्चे लगते हैं। और फिर भी कहानी का जो अपना 'larger-than-life' वाला व्यक्तित्व होता है वह भी बरकरार रहता है। कुल मिला कर, यह बहुत ही सलीके से सुनाई गई कहानी है जिसमें उम्दा विषय-वस्तु, श्रेष्ठ निर्माण मूल्यों, और सिनेमाई गुणवत्ता के चलते महान होने के पूरे गुण मौजूद हैं। मुझे इस फ़िल्म को आज तक की सभी हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में से कुछ चुनिंदा "न छोड़ने योग्य" फ़िल्मों की सूची में रखने में कोई हिचक नहीं होगी।

आशुतोष गोवारिकर अपनी पीढ़ी के महान निर्देशकों में नाम लिखाने की ओर अग्रसर हैं। 'लगान' शायद ज़्यादा मनोरंजक फ़िल्म थी, पर 'स्वदेस' अधिक विचारोत्तेजक और गहन है। गम्भीर, सामयिक और मुद्दों पर आधारित सिनेमा है। अपने समय की 'दो बीघा ज़मीन' है। पर इनकी ये दोनों फ़िल्में सिनेमाई उत्कृष्टता और अच्छी कही कहानी का श्रेष्ठ उदाहरण हैं। उनकी निर्देशकीय प्रतिभा अब तुक्के की बात नहीं रही। उन्होंने इसे सिद्ध कर दिया है। स्वदेस से ही एक विशेष उदाहरण लें। फ़िल्म में जब मोहन भार्गव (शाहरुख) हरिदास के गाँव से बिना किराया वसूले वापस लौटता है तो पहले नाव पर और फिर ट्रेन में उन दृश्यों में बिना कुछ कहे वे बहुत कुछ कह गए हैं। दृश्य के अन्त में जब मोहन पानी खरीद कर पीता है, वह मेरी हाल की याददाश्त में सबसे प्रभावी दृश्यों में से है। कहते हैं समझदार को इशारा काफ़ी होता है। अधिकतर हिंदी फ़िल्मकार या तो हमें समझदार नहीं समझते या उन्हें इशारा करना नहीं आता। शुक्र है कि इस फ़िल्मे में इस 'इशारे' की वापसी के संकेत दिखते हैं।

गायत्री जोशी बेहद प्रभावित करती हैं। जहाँ उन्हें नए चेहरे का फ़ायदा मिला है वहीं अभिनय में परिपक्वता भी दिखती है। पर उनका रोना-धोना थोड़ा कमज़ोर है। शाहरुख बिना किसी हिचक के इस फ़िल्म को अपनी सर्वश्रेष्ठ भूमिका और सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करार दे सकते हैं। वैसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ की बजाय एकमात्र श्रेष्ठ कहना भी कुछ गलत नहीं होगा। अभिनय के अलावा एक और चीज जो इस फ़िल्म को सफल बनाती है वह है इसकी पटकथा और उससे भी ज़्यादा इसके संवाद। पात्र बड़े स्वाभाविक लगते हैं। सब वही भाषा बोल रहे हैं जो करोड़ों लोग रोज शहरों, कस्बों और गाँवों में आम बोलचाल में बोलते हैं। संवाद की शक्ति इस फ़िल्म में उभर कर आती है। मेरा मानना है कि किसी कहानी या फ़िल्म के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण होता है किरदारों को विश्वसनीय बनाना। और संवाद, उनकी बोली और लहजा वो जादू की छड़ी है जो अगर ठीक से चलाई जाए तो हाथों-हाथ देखने वाले को पात्रों से जोड़ देती है। के पी सक्सेना ने लगान में भी यह कर दिखाया था और यहाँ भी वे पूरे सफल रहे हैं।

फ़िल्म के गाने मुझे फ़िल्म में बेहतर लगे। शुक्र है कि आशुतोष उन दिग्दर्शकों में से हैं जिन्हें गाने की ताकत का अन्दाज़ा है और उससे भी महत्वपूर्ण यह कि वे गाने के माध्यम से अपनी कहानी को आगे बढ़ाना जानते हैं। पिछले काफ़ी अर्से से रहमान की धुनें मुझे कुछ खास रुचिकर नहीं लगीं, पर पार्श्वसंगीत के मामले में मैं उन्हें अभी भी सबसे बेहतर उपलब्ध संगीतकारों में शुमार करता हूँ। इस फ़िल्म का पार्श्वसंगीत भी अपनी पारदर्शिता और भराव की वजह से अच्छा असर छोड़ता है।

पर यह भी सच नहीं कि स्वदेस एक सम्पूर्ण फ़िल्म है। कुल मिलाकर करीब ८-१० मिनट की फ़िल्म ऐसी है जो बाकी फ़िल्म के स्तर से मेल नहीं खाती। मसलन, नासा में फ़िल्माए अधिकतर दृश्य सपाट हैं। निर्देशक अमरीकी अभिनेताओं को अच्छी तरह 'हैंडल' नहीं कर पाए हैं। इसी तरह वृद्धाश्रम का दृश्य बड़ा ही कमज़ोर है, शायद नौसिखिया कलाकारों की वजह से। हालाँकि बाकी फ़िल्म में आशुतोष ने सहायक कलाकारों से कमाल का काम लिया है। एक और दृश्य जो मेरे खयाल में थोड़ा 'कच्चा' रह गया, वह है दशहरे वाले दिन मोहन भार्गव का गाँव के लोगों से "भारत की महानता" के बारे में मतभेद। मुझे लगता है कि यह फ़िल्म के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण दृश्यों में से था और इसे और अधिक प्रभावी बनाया जा सकता था। पर ऐसे सीन गिने-चुने हैं। तीन घंटे से अधिक के आनन्द में ये कुछ पल खास बाधा नहीं डालते।

मैं जानता हूँ कि लम्बाई की वजह से फ़िल्म की आलोचना हुई है। यहाँ तक कि उनके द्वारा भी जिन्हें फ़िल्म वैसे पसंद आई है। मुझे नहीं लगता कि यह आलोचना जायज़ है। फ़िल्म लंबी ज़रूर चलती है, पर थकती नहीं। उद्देश्य यह नहीं होता कि फ़िल्म लंबी न हो, बल्कि यह होता है कि उबाऊ न हो। स्वदेस बिल्कुल अन्त तक ताजा और रुचिकर रहती है। एकाध क्षण ऐसे आते हैं जब थोड़ी बेचैनी होती है या घड़ी की तरफ़ ध्यान जाता है (जैसे अन्त के आसपास नासा वाला सीन थोड़ा-सा लम्बा खिंच गया है), पर बड़ी जल्दी ही फ़िल्म पटरी पर वापस आ जाती है।

मेरे विचार में गम्भीर फ़िल्मों का निर्माण-मूल्यों से लैस होना हिन्दी फ़िल्मों के लिए एक दुर्लभ संयोग है। और जब ऐसा हो तो यह ख़ुशी का कारण है, और उम्मीद का भी। स्वदेस मेरे खयाल से ऐसी ही घटना है।

अन्त में आशुतोष से एक अनुरोध : भाई मेरे, जो कर रहे हो, जैसे कर रहे हो, वैसे ही करते रहो। कारण कि बिल्कुल सही-सही कर रहे हो। एक बात और। ये 'स्वदेश' नाम में क्या बुराई थी लाला? तत्सम-तद्भव ऐसे 'मिक्स' करने की क्या ज़रूरत आ पड़ी। अगर इतनी ही ठेठ होने की पड़ी थी तो 'अपना देस' कह लेते। 'स्व' संस्कृत का उपसर्ग है, इसे हर हिंदी शब्द के साथ नहीं जोड़ा जाता। यह किसी तत्सम के साथ ही जाता है। कभी 'स्व-गाँव' सुना है? क्या है कि आँख-कान को थोड़ा खटकता है। बाकी तुम्हारी फ़िल्म है, जो मर्जी नाम रखो। नाम का यही तो फ़ायदा है कि उसका कोई अर्थ निकलना ज़रूरी नहीं, न ही सही होना। इसी 'टेक्नीकॅलिटि' के चलते बच गए इस बार। पर इसका और फ़ायदा मत उठाना, भाई।

यह १९ वाँ डीसी फ़िल्म फ़ेस्टिवल है। हिन्दी फ़िल्में यहाँ पहले एकाध बार दिखाई तो गई हैं, पर इस बार की तरह नहीं। इस बार तो फ़ेस्टिवल की थीम ही 'बीजिंग से बॉलीवुड तक' है। हालाँकि फ़िल्मों के चयन से मुझे थोड़ी असंतुष्टि है पर कुछ हो रहा है यही काफ़ी है। यह जिम्मा प्रतिष्ठित स्मिथसोनियन इंस्टीच्यूट की मंजुला कुमार के हाथों में था। दरअसल भारतीय पैनोरमा का सारा काम-काज उन्होंने ही सँभाल रखा है। फ़िल्मों के चयन से लेकर विशेष मेहमानों की आवभगत और थियेटर में फ़िल्म व मेहमान के परिचय तक। समारोह की भारतीय फ़िल्में ये हैं: मुग़ल-ए-आज़म, रेनकोट, चोखेर बाली (बांग्ला), दिल से, देव, ब्लैक, हज़ारों ख़्वाहिशें ऐसी, बवंडर, संचारम (मलयालम), मॉर्निंग रागा, और सॉंग्स ऑफ़ महुलबनी (बांग्ला)। विशेष मेहमानों में शामिल हैं अमिताभ, अभिषेक, रितुपर्णो घोष, सुधीर मिश्रा, जगमोहन मूँधड़ा, नंदिता दास, आदि।

सारी फ़िल्में देखना तो संभव नहीं था, इसलिये हमने तय किया कि समय-रुचि-सामर्थ्य के अनुसार चुनाव किया जाए। और कम से कम 'देव' या 'ब्लैक' तो देखी ही जाए। अमिताभ इन फ़िल्मों के शो के दौरान उपस्थित रहने वाले थे और उनको देखने का मौका चूकने का कोई विशेष कारण नहीं बनता था। ऊपर से अभिषेक भी आने वाले थे। हमने 'देव' चुनी क्योंकि 'ब्लैक' हमने अभी पिछले दिनों ही देखी थी। इतवार को दोपहर का शो था। उसी दिन शाम को 'ब्लैक' भी दिखाई जानी थी। और दोनों ही फ़िल्मों में बच्चन पिता-पुत्र मौजूद रहने वाले थे।

१९२३ में बना ऐतिहासिक ऐवलॉन थियेटर डीसी का सबसे पुराना लगातार चालू रहने वाला सिनेमाघर था, जब २००१ में इसे बंद कर दिया गया। आस-पास के लोगों की अथक कोशिशों के बाद २००३ में यह फिर शुरू हुआ। कनेटिकट ऐवेन्यू पर चेवी चेज़ सर्किल के पास स्थित यह सिनेमाघर काफ़ी कुछ किसी छोटे भारतीय शहर के आम सिनेमाघर जैसा लगता है। 'देव' और 'ब्लैक' समेत फ़ेस्टिवल की कई महत्वपूर्ण फ़िल्में यहीं दिखाई जा रही हैं।

इतवार की दोपहरें अलसायी-सी होती हैं। पर बसन्त की ठंढी धूप इस दोपहर को ताज़ा रखने की पूरी कोशिश कर रही थी। कुछ घंटे-भर पहले पहुँच गए थे हम। टिकटें हमने पहले ही आरक्षित करवा दी थीं। कुछ खास भीड़-भाड़ तो नहीं थी, पर टिकट खिड़की बंद थी और चंद लोग टिकटों के "जुगाड़" में लगे थे। एक से पूछा तो बोले कि इस उम्मीद में हैं कि ब्लैक में मिल जाएँगी। बाद में पता चला कि वे महाशय बिना टिकट ही अंदर घुस लिए थे, यह कहकर कि एयर इंडिया से आए हैं।

खैर, हम अंदर पहुँचे। हॉल काफ़ी भर चुका था। मिनटों बाद ही पीछे की सीटों से कुछ शोर सुनाई दिया और सारी गर्दनें पीछे मुड़ने लगीं। अमिताभ और अभिषेक दरवाज़े के पास खड़े थे और उन्हें पिछली सीटों पर बिठाया जा रहा था। और जैसा कि अमिताभ की फ़िल्मों में उनकी "एंट्री" के वक़्त होता है, हॉल तालियों से गूँज रहा था। लगभग ये सारे दर्शक जीवन में पहली बार अमिताभ की कोई फ़िल्म पूरी की पूरी अमिताभ के साथ बैठकर देखने वाले थे। और तालियों से बखूबी यह पता चल रहा था। फिर फ़िल्मफ़ेस्ट के निदेशक टोनी गिटन्स और मंजुला जी मंच पर आए। निदेशक महोदय ने फ़ेस्टिवल का और मंजुला जी ने फ़िल्म और अमिताभ का परिचय दिया। थोड़ी-सी नर्वस लगीं। पर उनका क्या दोष। फिर अमिताभ मंच पर आये, कुछ फ़िल्म के बारे में बोले। कहा कि फ़िल्म पुलिस और राजनीति के बीच के गठजोड़ को दिखाती है और बहुत 'बोल्ड' है; बहुत ईमानदारी और हिम्मत से बनाई गई है; बाकी आप फ़िल्म में देखें। उसके बाद फ़िल्म शुरू हुई। अब तक हॉल खचाखच भर चुका था और चंद लोग गैलरी में खड़े-बैठे फ़िल्म देख रहे थे। अमिताभ, अभिषेक और अमर सिंह (जी हाँ, वही) पिछली पंक्ति में कोने की सीटों पर बैठे थे - कोने पर अभिषेक, फिर अमर सिंह, फिर अमिताभ। एक अमरीकी स्वयंसेविका उनकी दर्शकों से "रक्षा" के लिए अभिषेक के पहले खड़ी थीं। फ़िल्म हम पहले ही देख चुके थे और हमारी राय फ़िल्म के बारे में कुछ खास अच्छी नहीं थी। पर ऐसा भी नहीं था कि दोबारा झेल न सकें। सो बैठे रहे। मैं कुछ सोते, कुछ जागते देखता रहा। उम्मीद यह थी कि फ़िल्म के बाद शायद कोई मौका मिले, औटोग्राफ़ या फोटोग्राफ़ लेने का। जैसे-तैसे फ़िल्म ख़त्म हुई। बीच में तो कहीं तालियाँ नहीं बजीं पर फ़िल्म के खत्म होने पर जम कर बजीं। हालाँकि मुझे नहीं लगता कि लोगों को फ़िल्म कुछ खास पसंद आई होगी, पर जब अभिनेता वहीं मौजूद हो तो ताली बजाने में कसर करना अच्छी मेहमाननवाज़ी नहीं होती। कुछ इसी विचार से हमने भी लोगों का पूरा साथ दिया।

इस बीच मंजुला जी मंच की तरफ़ बढ़ने लगीं और भारतीय प्रशंसक (जो अब अच्छी खासी तादाद में दिख रहे थे) अमिताभ की तरफ़। यह सोचकर कि कहीं देर न हो जाए, मैं भी लपका। इतने में मंजुला जी ने घोषणा की कि अब अमिताभ श्रोताओं के सवालों का जवाब देंगे। लोग फिर बैठ गए। पर मैं चलता गया। सेकेंडो में मैं अमिताभ के पास था। बिल्कुल पास। कैमरा लिए। और कोई पास नहीं है। सिर्फ़ अमिताभ और उनको लेकर मंच की तरफ़ बढते हुए निदेशक महोदय। मैं हाथ मिलाता हूँ। फिर औटोग्राफ़ माँग रहा हूँ। निदेशक कहते हैं कि वे मंच पर जाकर वापस आएँगे। अमिताभ भी दोहराते हैं "I am coming back"। मैं कुछ तस्वीरें खींचता हूँ। और अमिताभ मंच की ओर बढ़ते रहते हैं। अब सोचने पर सब कुछ "सर्रियल"-सा लगता है। अवसर की अहमियत को दिमाग ने तब तक शायद प्रॉसेस नहीं किया था। अमिताभ मंच पर पहुँचते हैं और फिर सवाल-जवाब का सिलसिला शुरू हो जाता है। कुछ अच्छे और कई आम सवाल पूछे जाते हैं जिनका अमिताभ बड़े ही सलीके से और कभी-कभी मजाकिया उत्तर देते हैं। कई अमरीकी अगर फ़िल्म देखकर नहीं, तो इस संवाद से ज़रूर उनके प्रशंसक बन गए होंगे। प्रश्न पूछने वालों में अमरीकी ही ज़्यादा हैं। एक सवाल हमारे "डीसी बॉलीवुड मीटप ग्रुप" की सदस्या जेना भी पूछती हैं, हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में नाच-गानों की आवश्यकता के बारे में। पर अमिताभ एक घिसा-पिटा-सा उत्तर देते हैं। मैं मध्य गैलरी में मंच के पास जाकर कुछ और तस्वीरें लेता हूँ। मेरे पास अमिताभ से कुछ खास पूछने को नहीं है। कम से कम उस वक्त तो कुछ याद नहीं आता। हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में हिन्दी शीर्षकों (क्रेडिट्स) की अनुपस्थिति से मैं व्यथित हूँ पर विदेशी मंच पर यह प्रश्न मुझे असंगत लगता है और मैं विचार टाल देता हूँ। दूसरे यह भी कि मैं इस प्रश्न को जितने महत्व और गम्भीरता के साथ रखना चाहता हूँ, मुझे लगता है यहाँ शायद वह न मिले। इस बीच मैं कोशिश करता हूँ कि अभिषेक (जो अभी भी पिछली पंक्ति में अपनी सीट पर बैठे हैं) का औटोग्राफ़ ले लूँ। लेकिन कोने पर खड़ी वह स्वयंसेविका जो कि अब कुछ परेशान-सी लग रही है यह कह कर मना करती है कि इसकी इजाज़त नहीं है। मैं वहीं पास खड़ा उसके इधर-उधर होने का इंतज़ार करता हूँ, पर वह मौका कभी आता नहीं। मैं कुछ तस्वीरें तो खींच ही लेता हूँ। सवाल-जवाब के बाद मंजुला जी अभिषेक को मंच पर बुलाती हैं। जब वे मंच की ओर बढ़ते हैं, मुझे औटोग्राफ़ लेने का मौका मिलता है। मैं यशवंत व्यास की लिखी "अमिताभ का अ" उनके सामने बढ़ाता हूँ। वे मुस्कुराते हैं। पेन माँगते हैं। मैं पूछता हूँ कि क्या आपने पढ़ी है। वे मुस्कुरा कर हाँ कहते हैं और उसपर अपने दस्तख़त करते हैं। इस बीच उनके चारों ओर भीड़ बढ़ने लगती है। अब मैं उनको छोड़ अपने मुख्य "निशाने" की तरफ़ बढ़ता हूँ, जो पहले ही घिरा हुआ है। अभिषेक को मंच पर बुलाने का प्लान निदेशक महोदय को अब एक भूल लगता है और वे यह कहते सुनाई देते हैं, "I have never seen anything like this in my life." उन्हें शुक्र करना चाहिए कि यह फ़ेस्टिवल भारत में नहीं हो रहा है। पत्नी का कहना है कि यहाँ के प्रशंसक बड़े ही सभ्य तरीके से व्यवहार कर रहे हैं। मैं उससे सहमति व्यक्त करता हूँ। और फिर लोगों से घिरे अमिताभ तक पहुँचता हूँ और उन्हें वही किताब थमाता हूँ। एक पल को वे किताब के शीर्षक को देखते हैं और एक पल को मुझे। मेरे दिमाग में "भाई तुम साइन करोगे या नहीं" कौंधता है। शुक्र है मुँह से नहीं निकलता। अमिताभ मुस्कुराते हैं और साइन कर देते हैं। उनका एक और प्रशंसक धन्य हो जाता है। किसी विजेता की तरह पीछे मुड़ता हूँ तो पत्नी बड़ी उत्सुकता से पूछती है, "मिल गया?" चेहरे पर ढाई इंच की मुस्कुराहट लिए हाँ कहता हूँ। अब अपना सामान उठाकर हम हॉल से निकलने के लिए पीछे की तरफ़ चलते हैं। वहाँ पिछली सीट पर अमर सिंह और उनकी पत्नी भीड़ से दूर अकेले शांतिपूर्वक बैठे अमिताभ के अमरीकी प्रशंसकों को देख रहे हैं। मैं उन्हें वही किताब दिखाता हूँ और पूछता हूँ कि क्या उन्होंने पढ़ी है। वे उलट-पुलट कर देखते हैं और कहते हैँ कि ये तो नहीं देखी कभी। मैं सलाह देता हूँ कि पढ़ें, अच्छी किताब है। वे किताब पर शुभकामनाएँ लिखते हैं। मैं दो-एक सवाल पूछ्ता हूँ अमिताभ के आगे के कार्यक्रम के बारे में। वे बताते हैं कि अमिताभ कल ही भारत रवाना हो रहे हैं। धन्यवाद कहकर मैं विदा लेता हूँ। मेरे पीछे खड़ीं एक अमरीकी युवती मुझसे पूछती हैं कि ये कौन हैं। मैं उन्हें बताता हूँ कि ये अमर सिंह... इससे पहले कि मैं अपना वाक्य पूरा करूँ वे चहक उठती हैं "Oh! so *he* is Amar Singh."। मैं ढाई इंच की मुस्कान को दो इंच का करके बाहर निकलता हूँ। एक अविस्मरणीय शाम पूरी होने को है। मेरा दिमाग अब प्रोसेसिंग शुरू कर चुका है। अब मैं इस आनंद रस को बूँद-बूँद पी रहा हूँ।

Critics trash Bombay Dreams - The Times of India:

"The other critics were even harsher. USA Today begins with 'How do you say 'mind-numbing bunk' in Hindi? I couldn't tell you, but after attending a certain preview performance last weekend, I'd like to propose a new English-language synonym: Bombay Dreams.'

The Toronto Star calls it a 'Broadway nightmare' and adds that 'There's no other way to describe the misbegotten monstrosity, which opened in New York last night.'

The plot has come in for scathing criticism from most critics. The Washington Post said 'It's such a bubbly piece of kitsch, such a torrential downpour of showbiz cliche, that it almost qualifies as a lark...what sends the show spinning, spinning down the drain -- isn't the terminally dumb plot (a parody of the filmic conventions of Bollywood) or the insipid characters (stock figures from every romance you've ever seen). It's a tone deafness in the humor, a comic cluelessness that's hard to fathom...' "

"What would make it abroad, according to Dweyer, is not the aspirational Yash Chopra cinema, but a movie rooted in identifiable Indian modernity. "I think a Dil Chahta Hai could have made it," she expresses. "A tightened version of Ram Gopal Verma's movies have international potential," says Delacey.

"A Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, for instance, was a magnificent canvas. But everyone sniggered when they tried to pass off Budapest as Italy," smiles Dweyer. "So while you can't make boo-boos like that, the song and dance routine works just fine. Don't compromise on the Indianness of it; that's what makes Bollywood so unique," chips in Delacey."

Hi Pakistan: Hindi cinema and us - By Asghar Butt:

"At least strong enough to meet the challenge posed by the onslaught of the Indian movies. That does not imply that most of the Indian movies are of a very high standard. They are not. Most of them are in fact unwatchable. But those that are watchable or good and are far better than those which are our watchable movies. Their technical quality, their story line, their music, their direction and their acting level is better. Granted that they spent a lot more money on each film than we do, especially on the cast, sets, production and music but for a story, direction and acting one does not need more money, only more brains and know how. Our cinema industry has not attracted real expertise or better brains.

Those who disagree with this thesis should have seen the Zee TV programme of film awards for Indian movies, telecast on the night of the 27th February from Dubai. Apart from a large number Indian film personalities some film directors, actors and actresses from Pakistan were also there. No harm in that. But when our people were invited by the hosts to speak on the occasion, the comparison between our people and the Indians in the level of education, command over expression, self confidence, stage presence, etc was so markedly in favour of the Indians that any Pakistani watching the programme would have felt embarrassed. Watching that show would also have explained where we miss out is in manpower quality. And without quality in manpower to hope that we will ever be able to compete with the Indians or anyone else will be futile. Our policy makers should keep that in mind. "

Calcutta Mail, 2003 (*) - Hard to believe it was directed by Sudhir 'Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin' Mishra. Or was it the ill health and death of Renu Saluja -- his wife and one of the most wonderful and prolific film editors that Hindi Films have seen?

The only bright moments of the film are provided by the lead actors Rani Mukherjee, Satish Kaushik and Anil K, though even these guys add their share to the mediocrity at times. Manisha Koirala is 'unjhelable' as always with her highly irritating, whispering dialogue delivery. And what is with the children in Hindi movies these days.

Bullets Over Broadway, 1994 - Woody Allen time again for me. In this one he is not in front of the camera. John Cussack plays a young playwright. As with almost every Allen film, this one is also filled with innumerable great moments. Not his finest but still a fine work.

Miller's Crossing, 1990 - Coen brothers show their mastery over crime drama and their usual flair for interesting ideas. (****)

Flirting with Disaster, 1996 - Ben Stiller. (*)

The Cheap Detective, 1978 - A spoof on The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. Funny in parts but falls flat most of the time. (*)

The Maltese Falcon, 1941 - The film that made Bogart a star and Sam Spade a classic character. Sydney Greenstreet as Kasper Gutman is also impressive and has some good lines. This classic film noir is an interesting suspense mystery.

Kasper Gutman: "I distrust a close-mouthed man. He generally picks the wrong time to talk and says the wrong things. Talking's something you can't do judiciously, unless you keep in practice. Now, sir, we'll talk if you like. I'll tell you right out, I'm a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."

The Conversation, 1974 - Coppola made this just after his grand Godfather successes. Well made. Gene Hackman is very good. Raises some interesting and thought-provoking privacy issues. (***)

The Shining, 1980 - Kubrick's trademark long shots, visual grandeur, use of background score are very much the things that make this movie. Nicholson is brilliant. based on a Stephen King's novel. Horror. (***)

Trainspotting, 1995 - Wonderful British cult classic. Tagline: "Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?" (****)

The Usual Suspects, 1995 - Second Viewing. Still look excellent. (*****). Directed by Bryan Singer.

Roger & Me, 1989 - Documentary. Michael Moore attempts to confront General Motors then-chief Roger Smith. It's actually about a town losing its livelihood. Not even nearly as good as his latest one (BFC) but his trademark humor is present. (**)

The Big Lebowski, 1998 - Coen brothers. Very different and original. Wonderful performances. (****)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - 6.5/10

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) - Gregory Peck, Ruth White. Dir by Robert Mulligan. Bright, nostalgic southern small town moments are the most memorable. Very good performances. Gregory Peck is at his gracious best except in some courtroom scenes, where he tends slightly towards the ham-osphere. One can also see where Dev Anand (often called Gregory Peck of Indian films) got some of his popular mannerisms from. The girl who has played "Scout" is amazingly charming in some scenes. I especially liked the one where Gregory Peck reads a story to her at bedtime. The chemistry of the characters and the casualness of the scene is rare.

Narrator (older Scout Finch): Maycomb was a tired old town, even in 1932 when I first knew it. Somehow, it was hotter then. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon after their three o'clock naps. And by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frosting from sweating and sweet talcum. The day was twenty-four hours long, but it seemed longer. There's no hurry, for there's nowhere to go and nothing to buy...and no money to buy it with. Although Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself...That summer, I was six years old.

Narrator (older Scout Finch): Neighbors bring food with death, and flowers with sickness, and little things in between. Boo was our neighbor. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a knife, and our lives.

Narrator (older Scout Finch): There just didn't seem to be anyone or anything Atticus couldn't explain. Though it wasn't a talent that would arouse the admiration of any of our friends, Jem and I had to admit he was very good at that, but that was all he was good at, we thought.

DVD - the accompanying documentary on the DVD about the making of the movie is wonderful. No less enjoyable than the movie itself. B/W. 130 mins. 8/10.

The Hours (2002) - I think the movie tries to look more intelligent that what it is. Nicole is good (but again not an awardable stuff, IMO). The idea of running three stories together is interestingly done (not new of course) and works. It is the stories themselves and the characters which make little sense. The expressions of Julianne are even confusing at times. The character also looks trying to say a lot while saying nothing. I think it works better in a book (the movie is adopted from a novel by Michael Cunningham) than it does in a movie. Plot Outline: The story revolves around three women in different eras who are all profoundly affected by the works of Virginia Woolf.

The Pianist (2002) - The film has recreated some extraordinary visuals of the Hitler-era but often is cliched and even melodramatic in its narrative of the period. A very fundamental problem of the movie lies in the fact that though it makes you drop your jaw at some times, it fails to touch the sensitivity in any striking way, which the director seems to striving for and for which the movie had more than enough scope too. I am not sure if the performace by Adrien Brody was good enough, certainly not enough to be awarded. The music score is wonderful. Directed by Roman Polanski.

About Schmidt (2002) - Not much to say about. Some good lines, good performances and a lazy casual pace. Okay for a lazy afternoon.

Matrix Reloaded (2003)- The special effects are dazzling. But that's basically all about it. The rest of the parts seem to be there just to separate the sfx scenes. There is a very clever pattern about the special effects though. The film tries to incorporate all kind of computer graphics technology used hitherto in the sfx movies, which though makes it all-encompassing, yet leaves a lot to be desired from a movie that is sequel to the awesomely innovative and original one. It "uses" effects from Aliens, Terminator, Crouching Tiger.., Mummy and the Matrix original itself. However, there are a couple of sequences which are indeed executed like never before and worth a view. One is of course the already-popular fight scene of Neo with multiple Smiths and the other is the bike chase. But unfortunately, what could have been a classic with such good technical base, has been turned into an unconvincing and often confusing tale with many unjustified responses and absurd theories which justify ghosts as non/wrong-functional programs. As if to complete the pointlessness, movie ends abruptly without explanations, and the unexpected and even offending line - "to be concluded". The lines are unnecessarily complicated mostly. It also fails to stand on its own and be comprehesible. One needs to see the original Matrix to have a grasp of it, which is a definite failure especially when even this part is not completed in entirety. But all said, if you can keep aside your logical wants for a while, go ahead and see it. It still has some awesome visuals never seen before on a screen.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993) - An enjoyable movie for a relaxing evening at home! The wordplay and acting of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, starring as Benedick and Beatrice, two marriage-phobic rivals unsuccessfully trying to escape love somewhere in an idyllic Italian town several centuries ago, give the pleasure of the movie. However, Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard) is a very unconvincing lover showing no emotions to the news that his false accusations killed his beloved Hero (Kate Beckinsale). The other oddity of the movie is Keanu Reeves as the bastard(ly) brother of the prince(ly) Denzel Washington -- why would anyone (and particularly Kenneth Branagh) cast Keanu Reeves for a Shakespeare comedy is beyond me. Michael Keaton is an entertainingly talkative nutcase whose verbiage is all non-sense in reverse order. Of course, the sumptuous Tuscan scenery is as idealized as possible, but then again this is not an Italian movie about Italian lovers -- it is Shakespeare for the masses!

Do Dooni Chaar (1969) - The film is based on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors and is scripted by Gulzar. Gulzar, as he confessed himself later, was not very happy with the direction (by Debu Sen). This prompted him to create his own version later as 'Angoor' - arguably one of the best comedies in Hindi films. Back to DDC, Kishore and Asit Sen both play double roles. Rest of the cast include Tanuja and Iftekhar. Iftekhar (police inspector) incidentally is the only person to appear in both DDC and Angoor and that too in the same role. The music by Hemant Kumar adds no value to the film and otherwise is dull too. Gulzar also seems out of sorts with his writing. However, another role that he plays in the movie as the voice of the 'suutradhaar' is interesting. Asit Sen is good, at least in one of his roles. Kishore is way off the mark. The lady who plays Kishore's wife is surprisingly very natural though lacks cinematic appeal. Tanuja is ok. On the whole, a rather poor and chaotic effort. Not even close to what one would expect from a Bimal Roy banner.

Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) - Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Jane Alexandar. Writer/Dir Robert Benton. The movie has good pace and packs some wonderful lines. Dustin is brilliant. Apparently he was going thru a similar phase in his own life when he accepted the movie. And the challenge, according to the producer Stanley R. Jaffe, was one of the most difficult an actor can have - to play himself. Plot Outline: A just divorced man must learn to care for his son on his own, and then must fight in court to keep custody of him. The film was remade (of course, without authorization) in Hindi as Akele Hum Akele Tum with Amir and Maneesha as the lead pair. In an almost customary manner, the Hindi counterpart lost the essense of the movie and went astray with a lot of unwanted stuff (e.g.: music piracy - how ironic). Absolutely irritating performace by Maneesha made the pain insufferable.

Being John Malkovich (1999) - conceptually good and with a lot of potential that is wasted. with some sparks of brilliance in between, the movie ends up rather ordinarily. good performances by John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener. the puppeteer shows in the early part of the movie are wonderful. also, the idea of getting into subconscious of Malkovich and seeing all kinds of stuff inside was of good potential but is wasted by being verbose and predictable.

Road to Perdition (2002) - fairly average chicago mob (of 30s) saga. pales drastically in comparison to other movies of this genre. the screenplay is mediocre and even with names like Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, the movie is unattractive. Hanks plays a mob hitman Michael Sullivan and IMO is miscast. on the other hand Newman is brilliantly cast for the mafia boss and carries it well too. anyway, run-of-the-mill stuff.

Pride and Prejudice (1995) - wonderful adaptation of the Jane Austin novel by the same name. this 2 DVD length mini-series (originally made for BBC/channel4?) needs some dedicated watching, but is better finished in one go. overall okay performances. Elizabeth is charmingly played by Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth puts in subtly a subdued (and proud) flavour to Mr. Darcy's character. In the 80s, a successful hindi tv serial named Trishna was made on the novel and caught good attention for its bringing together of some beautiful and handsome faces on the box.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) - funny, but at someone's expense. it seems another of those quintessential american traits to make fun of other cultures and to pose as balanced by trying to put a couple positive things amodst 100 subtle and not-so-subtle abuses. yet an okay movie. essentially monsoon wedding's greek counterpart. the movie was a surprise blockbuster and has given birth to a new tele-series "My Big Fat Greek Life."

Saathiya (2002) - Vivek Oberoi, Rani Mukherji. Directed by Shaad Ali (Muzaffar Ali's son). Story and screenplay by Mani Rathnam. Dialogues and lyrics by Gulzar. Remake of the Madhavan's debut Tamil hit - Alaipayuthey. The movie is good in bits and overall very fresh because of the treatment of characters. The casual way of dialogue delivery by characters coupled with Gulzar's dialogues adds up to the freshness. Rani Mukherji performs with ease. Vivek is also good but tends to be a little conscious sometimes. The screenplay is ordinary but the details, especially of the married life of the two, are very thoughtfully conceived. The movie is also unconventional in a lot of ways including the perspective towards life in general, which is very casual and open. For instance, the ease with which the pair decide to marry and yet live separately for some while is a refreshingly new thought. But still the movie has its share of faults and unconvincing reactions which if avoided could have turned the movie into a brilliant one. It stops well before that though. And yet, what would normally be just an "okay" movie seems like "very good" because of the state of the movies in general these days. Shaad Ali is impressive in his debut directorial venture. A time-pass watch.

Supporting cast include Sandhya Mridul (Rani's sister), Tanuja and in a suprise appearance, Tabu and Shahrukh Khan (though he is able to do as much damage to the cause of the movie as his brief appearance could have done, with his terribly self-consciousness).

Ice Age (2002) - Definitely the best of the this weekend's lot. It goes as high as Shrek in everything except that it lacks a solid storyline. The similarity with Shrek can also be seen in two major characters of the movie. Manfred-the mammoth (Ray Romano) and Sid-the sloth (the talented stand-up comic and actor John Leguizamo) are too close to the characters of Shrek and the donkey respectively of the movie Shrek. The direction credits are shared by Carlos Saldanha (I) and Chris Wedge. Animation is brilliant and definitely amongst one of the best in its genre. The lines are well written and the authentic tid-bits about the ice age makes interesting stuff. An enjoyable watch.

Gosford Park (2001) - The old Murder-in-the-house story told with a different style. Tagline: Tea At Four, Dinner At Eight, Murder At Midnight. The film is set in 1932's England. The emphasis is more on the details of the lifestyle of the elite and the service class during that era, than the story itself. The film has a good pace and goes on pretty smoothly for an attentive viewer till the real murder takes place. The predictability of the plot, though may bring some restlessness. The story idea and direction is by Robert Altman. Most performances are good, some loud. The cinematography and art direction is impeccable. Overall, an okay watch for a lazy afternoon. Nothing great.

Lilo & Stitch (2002) - The movie starts with a good idea but very soon loses focus and goes haywire. Especially, coming from Disney, it disappoints. (Warning: Spolier ahead) The charactersation is a little flawed and it seems a little too quick for Stitch to turn from a devil into an angel. Chris Sanders (III) takes the credit for the idea, writing, direction and even the voice of Stitch - pretty much a one man show. The music is enchanting and the hawaaiian chorus (by a local children choir) is very soothing. The animation is good and a little different than normal in drawing style, but nothing pathbreaking or even extraordinary.

Mandi (1983) - Possibly one of the largest talent assemble for a Hindi movie other than Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (which incidentally has more or less the same cast). It's like a who's who of 70s-80s talented lot of actors and actresses. Naseer, Shabana, Smita, Om Puri, Neena Gupta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Soni Razdan, Anu Kapoor, Saeed Jaffery, Amrish Puri, Anita Kanwar, Pankaj Kapoor, Ratna Pathak.. hooff.. and a few more. Though many of them are wasted, some shine all the way. And Naseer and Shabana excel. I expected a meatier role for Smita, but she was a miscast and even her performance was not upto her standards. The film, based on a short story called 'Anandi', intends to be a comedy, with some awkward reality as the base, making it a strange mix. Still throughout, the movie keeps the lighter spirit flowing, mainly through Shabana's character. Shyam Benegal shows his flair for humor. Pt. Satyadev Dube provides some very good lines and Vanraj Bhatia makes the music score as closer sounding to the environment as only he could. A good watch.

The film was received well and is said to have ushered a new era of low-budget English films in India. Thoroughly disappointing though. Falls apart technically. Cinema is a different medium and has its own language and just because one *thinks* that one has something good to say doesn't mean one can make good cinema. That Nagesh Kukunoor doesn't have anything worthwhile even to say is another matter. Avoidable.

Anubhav (1971) - Dir by Basu Bhattacharya. Sanjeev, Tanuja, Dinesh Thakur, A.K. Hangal. Expected a whole lot better from a Basu Bhattacharya movie. A rather poor fare which stands nowhere in comparison to the quality of even its own songs. Surprisingly, the BGM by Kanu Roy (with an assistant like Kersi Lord) is one of the worse things about it, along with the camerawork, editing and direction and what not. Sanjeev disappoints while the rest of the cast is just okay. Better listened to than seen. Wonderful songs. DVD. B/W. 3/10.

Auntie Mame (1958) - Played by Rosalind Russell. Plot: An orphan goes to live with his free-spirited aunt. Conflict ensues when the executor of his father's estate objects to the aunt's lifestyle. VHS. Technicolor. 143 mins. 6.5/10

Ever After (1998) - Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston. A modern day story of Cinderella about a girl who finds her Prince Charming. Dir by Andy Tennant. Wonderful and enjoyable. VHS. 121 mins. 8.5/10

Deewangee (2002) - Akshaye Khanna, Ajay Devgan, Urmila. Akshaye continues his excellent form that he gained with DCH. I just can't believe that he is the same guy who did so pathetically in Taal and before. He has got it just right now and simply by being himself. Also I think, he understands his weaknesses and strong points much better now. Looks like he is slated to be the next Aamir. The movie is different in the way that unlike other similar fares it keeps a grip towards the end. However, it is miserable in the first half, where it unabashedly copies 'Primal Fear'. Still better of the current lot, especially because of Akshaye and his confrontational scenes with Ajay, who has done okay in his Ranjit-avatar. Urmila, as always, is highly irritating. Written (?, copied) and directed by Aneez Bazmi (he wrote the slick Govinda's 'Aankhen' too). And oh yes, I skipped the songs. DVD. 6.5/10.

Fiddler On The Roof (1971) - A Fantabulous musical. The movie, an adaptation of a very famous stage musical, is very compatible for a "Bollywood"-regular. Though generally a musical in itself is highly consumable to this kind of movie-goer (incl. me), the identicalness of characters and situations makes it even more home-like. Even the length of the film (a notch above 3 hours) will vouch for that :). Dir by Norman Jewison. The film carries a delightful music score with classics like "If I were a Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset". Topol plays the protagonist (Tevye) and reminds more often than not of older Dilip Kumar. Joyful.

Tevye [Talking to God]: I know, I know. We are your chosen people. But, once in a while, can't you choose someone else?

Tevye: As the good book says, when a poor man eats a chicken, one of them is sick.

In the Bedroom (2001) - Brilliant. Dir by Todd Field. Very real characters, great performances, superb direction and some outstanding cinematic moments, all together make it a great movie. The end seems a little stretched and a little lame for such a well-told movie otherwise, but it still makes a point. Tom Wilkinson (I) is excellent. Others include Sissy Spacek, Nick Stahl and Marisa Tomei. Plot (imdb): A New England couple's college-aged son dates an older woman with two small children and an unwelcome ex-husband. Then something terrible occurs in this wrenching, emotional drama.

Plot Outline: A single mother, with dreams of becoming a writer, has a son at the age of 15 in 1968, and goes through a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father.

East is East (1999) - One of the better movies on the expatriate South Asian community in UK. Funny, honest and not pretending to be great. Om Puri is good (nothing great), Linda Bassett is better as his wife. Dir by Damien O'Donnell. Okay time pass.

Nothing great to offer otherwise.

Sense and Sensibilities (1995) - A wonderful, beautiful movie. Based on Jane Austin's famous novel, it has screenplay by Emma Thompson who also starts in the main role. She is brilliant and is ably supported by Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant. Kate Winslet is little irritating in some parts, but carries out well in the end. Dir by Ang Lee. The lush green british locales are a treat to eyes. Good entertainment. Tagline: Lose your heart and come to your senses.

The Thomas Crowne Affair (1999) - Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo. Dir by John McTiernan. The movie was a remake of a 1966 movie with the same name. Plot Outline: A very rich and successful playboy amuses himself by stealing artwork, but may have met his match in a seductive detective. It's a slick heist movie. However one thing which sometime irritate during the movie is its pretentiousness. The movie tries to show itself as of a great character and substance which it is not. Yet, thoroughly enjoyable.

Gross Pointe Blank (1997) - Fun to watch. The movie has an attitude of its own. Dir by George Armitage. John Cusack, Minnie Driver. Plot: Martin Blank is a professional assassin. He is sent on a mission to a small Detroit suburb, Grosse Pointe, and, by coincidence, his ten-year high school reunion party is taking place there at the same time.

Il Postino/The Postman (1994) - Italian - May be not a great film but not far from it either. Plot: Simple Italian postman learns to love poetry while delivering mail to a famous poet; he uses this to woo local beauty Beatrice. The film is remarkable for one of the very best performances I have seen, by the Italian actor Massimo Troisi. Philippe Noiret as the famous poet Pablo Naruda is also wonderful. The camerawork and the soundtrack also add to the feast. Dir by Michael Radford (was a surprise to know that he was born in New Delhi).

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) - This is what I would call a work of brilliance. Close to life and so very unpredictable. The characters are so much more identifiable with all their weaknesses and yet elusively mysterious because of their individuality. The subtleties of the movies are easy to get missed in the first viewing esp. if you are busy enjoying New York. Dir by Blake Edwards, the film is an adaptation of a Truman Capote novel. The screenplay with some terrific lines is written by George Axelrod. Again Audrey steals the show, even though George Peppard's performance does a lot for the character of Paul/Fred. However one feels that the caricature character of the Japanese could have been done without.

Memorable lines:
Paul Varjak: "You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, "Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness." You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."

Paul: The mean reds, you mean like the blues?

Wait Until Dark (1967) - 3rd time watching and it still amazes me. There are few films that can capture your mind and heart together at the same time, in a better manner. Adapted from a stage play written by Frederick Knott, the movie is a fine example of wonderful direction (by Terence Young) especially considering that there was not much of a story to tell. The gripping screenplay is written by Robert Howard-Carrington . Brilliant performance by Audrey. Also liked Alan Arkin as Mr. Roat.

Psycho (1960) - Quintessential Hitchcock. Written by Joseph Stefano, based on the novel by Robert Bloch. Great camerawork (by John L. Russell). Great direction. Filmed in black and white. Presents extraordinary visuals and good screen excitement. Aided by a very good performance by Anthony Perkins as the motel owner Norman Bates.

Bonus materials in the DVD include several interviews for "the making of".
